Chef Li, nestled in the heart of San Jose at 2033 Camden Ave, is a standout destination for authentic Chinese cuisine lovers seeking a blend of tradition and innovation. This charming restaurant invites guests with its beautifully appointed dining area, where the ambiance balances warmth and elegance, making every meal feel like a special occasion.
The menu at Chef Li is a delightful journey through Chinese flavors, boasting a rich array of dishes that never fail to impress. For seafood aficionados, the Szechuan Scallops are a must-try—tender scallops sautéed with crisp water chestnuts and zucchini, enveloped in a fiery, garlicky sauce that tingles the palate. Prawn lovers will savor the Prawns with Cashew Nuts, a symphony of juicy prawns and crunchy vegetables, finished with a nutty cashew crunch, or dive into the bold, spicy notes of Kung Pao Prawns with its signature peanut topping.
Rice and noodle dishes add a vibrant flavor profile that is both comforting and refreshing. The Fresh Pineapple Basil Fried Rice with Prawns and Chicken is a customer favorite — each bite bursting with juicy pineapple, fragrant basil, tender prawns, and chicken, perfectly balanced with peas, carrots, and egg. The shrimp fried rice offers succulent shrimp mingling with fluffy, well-seasoned rice and fresh veggies, making it an irresistible option for any meal.
Desserts at Chef Li are luxurious and crafted to captivate the senses. Imagine indulging in the Coppa Mascarpone, a luscious chocolate cream layered with smooth mascarpone, crowned with amaretto cookie crumbs and rich chocolate curls—every spoonful is decadence at its finest. Kids (and the young at heart) will adore the Kids Bear—an adorable all-chocolate gelato dome playfully decorated with a cute bear face, making dessert a joyful experience for the entire family. For those craving a fruity escape, the Exotic Bomba combines mango, passion fruit, and raspberry sorbetto coated in white chocolate, drizzled with dark chocolate—a beautiful harmony of tart and sweet.
Beyond the carefully curated menu, Chef Li’s service stands out for its warmth and attentiveness, making every guest feel welcomed and valued. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the friendly staff and the smooth flow of service, with dishes arriving promptly and plated with care. The inviting atmosphere is enhanced by elegant floral arrangements — which, as a charming detail, are also available for purchase, adding a touch of beauty and uniqueness to each visit.
Regular diners fondly recall their favorites, from the velvety Wanton Soup to the melt-in-your-mouth Shrimp Egg Foo Yung, reflecting Chef Li’s mastery in balancing flavors and textures. The thoughtful accommodation of dietary needs, including gluten-free options using specially sourced soy sauce, speaks to the kitchen’s dedication to inclusive, delicious dining.

Chef Li’s is officially my fave Chinese restaurant. Beautiful dining area. Service is friendly and inviting. I Love Wanton Soup and they did not disappoint. The Fresh Pineapple Basil Fried Rice w/Prawns & Chickens was soooo good! My friend let me taste her Shrimp Egg Foo Yung and it just melted like …. oh my goodness! I look forward to trying many more dishes. I had my dish boxed to go because it was a lot to eat in one setting. Warmed it up later for dinner and it was just as good as the first time/bite. Thank you!
VERY complete menu with a friendly staff. We visited on a Sat night and there were plenty of open tables at 6:30pm. We ordered three dishes plus steamed rice and everything was table side within 5 minutes. Desserts are pretty expensive as is the beer at $9 per 12 oz bottle. All the flowers inside the restaurant are for sale. Nice touch!
First time dining here and it was delicious! They offer GF dishes (using gf soy sauce), just ask. We ordered the chef special thin rice noodles, kung pao beef and shredded pork. All were tasty. Atmosphere was nice. Will be coming back to try other dishes!
Had dinner at Chef Li and ordered the seafood combo and fried tofu clay pot. The amount and variety of seafood is generous and the taste is also good without being too salty. Also ordered a Tiramisu dessert from the impressive dessert menu as well.
It's sad that they're closing on May 16, 2025. We've dined here for more than twenty years. Love their food and gracious owner. We've also bought many lovely orchids here for special occasions.
Highlights - Chef li recently remodeled. Think modern Chinese restaurant with a flower aesthetics vibe here. - Seating indoors and takeout available - The best part, you can purchase all the orchid/flower arrangements in the restaurant. The food also comes with floral decor. - Plenty of parking in the plaza that has a market, many eateries, and dessert shops nearby - Great option for vegetarians or vegans. - My favorite dishes: Assorted seafood bean curd soup, lettuce wraps, honey roasted walnut prawns, dry sautéed string beans, and vegetable delight - Dessert menu is impressive for a Chinese restaurant with options that include nicely present gelato, cheesecake, panna cotta, to name a few. My go to is just basic fried bananas with their green tea ice cream. Tip - Take out is just as good as eating in. Know what you want and be ready when on the phone. No frills, efficient, and a staple for Chinese food.
Warm and welcoming service paired with delicious food and beautiful flowers to look upon. It was our first time coming here after reading it would close after 28 years. We live on the east side but we wanted to show support however we can for their last two weeks. We’re very pleased to come by twice to try out more savory dishes and unique desserts. I have a sweet tooth so seeing unique desserts beyond just ice cream was such a treat. I got to try the exotic bomba and one with cherry. The desserts were sweet, delicious and not something that’s typical for a Chinese restaurant. As for the atmosphere, it’s definitely the cleanest, neatest, and more aesthetic Chinese restaurant inside. Having flowers around the restaurant and on tables made it feel like I was dining in a flower garden. The flowers are all well taken care of, we hope to show the Hawaiian orchids we’ve gotten just as much love. Sad to see a SJ staple go, I wish I knew about this place sooner.
